Health is Wealth!          Peace of Mind is Happiness!      Yoga Shows the Way!

Swami Vishnu-Devananda

1927-1993

Swami Vishnu-Devananda was born in the South of India. At a young age he entered the army in the persuit of obtaining education in science. One day when Swamiji was looking in the waste basket for a piece of paper he lost, he found the 20 Spiritual Instructions by Swami Sivananda. “An ounce of practice is better than tons of theory”.  Inspired with these words Swami Vishnu-Devananda travelled all the way to Rishikesh on his weekend off to meet this man.

Swami Vishnu-Devananda soon became a dedicated disciple of Swami Sivananda, deeply studying and mastering Hatha Yoga. Swami Vishnu-Devananda was the first Hatha Yoga Teacher of the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy.

In 1957 Swami Sivananda gave Swami Vishnu-Devananda a 10 rupee note (less than a US dollar) to go to North America and spread the teachings of Yoga. He said “People are waiting”. Swami Vishnu-Devananda finally settled in Montreal, Canada and started his first Yoga Center. Soon after, he started an Ashram (Yoga Camp) in the Mountains just outside of Montreal. He went on to start Ashrams in America, Bahamas, Europe, India and Centers all over the world making the largest yoga organization. Currently there are over 20 yoga centers, 9 Ashrams and over 26,000 people have completed the Sivananda Yoga Teacher Training Course.

Swami Vishnu-Devananda was very dedicated to world peace and is the founder of T.W.O (True World Order). Know as “The Flying Swami” for his Peace Missions around the world in his peace plane, Swamiji would fly over troubled areas of the world dropping flowers and letters of peace.
