Yoga Styles
There is only One Yoga, but there are many different teachers and lineages which have developed and through marketing and promotion many more new individual styles have emerged. 

Here are some of the major styles currently practiced in modern times:   


Ananda

Ananda Yoga is a classical gentle inward focused Hatha Yoga Style developed by Swami Kriyananda who was a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda.


Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is the style developed by K. Pattabhi Jois.  Also known as Power Yoga for its intense physical practice.


Bikram Yoga

The Original Hot Yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury which uses a heated room to help warm and stretch muscles. 


Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the classical and traditional style of all yoga.  Usually there is a rest/relaxation between each pose to balance, recharge and re-energize the body before the next posture.   Classes and styles depend on the lineage of the instructor. 


Hatha Yoga Flow

Hatha Yoga Flow Classes are similar to classical Hatha Yoga, but a little more flowing with no or less rest time between poses. 


Hot Yoga

Hot Yoga is based on Bikram Yoga.


Integral

Developed by Swami Satchidananda, Integral yoga focuses on pranayama, meditation and poses.


Iyengar

Iyengar yoga was created by B.K.S. Iyengar which focuses on the fine details of the postures through alignment with props and belts.


Kripalu

Developed in the West, Kripalu focuses on breath, alignment, and coordinating breath with movement.


Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga developed by Yogi Bhajan, focuses on awakening the inner power of the Kundalini through poses, breath, movement and meditation.


Power Yoga

Power Yoga is based on Ashtanga Yoga.


Sivananda Yoga

Sivananda Yoga is classical/traditional Hatha Yoga as taught by Swami Vishnu-Devananda one of Swami Sivananda's disciples.  Classes include prayers, pranayama, Sun Salutation and a 12 set system of yoga poses followed by a long relaxation.  Mediation, chanting and karma yoga is also a strong part of the full practice of Sivananda Yoga. 


Yoga is a science which was give by enlightened masters that cannot be seen or truly understood.  This science should not be changed.  Always practice a style that is traditional and that has not been changed or rearranged.
